DOLLAR BAHU: A CRITICAL STUDY. This chapter deals with the critical analysis of Sudha Murty‟s first novel Dollar Bahu that was first published by East West. Sudha Murty’s Dollar Bahu is a rather sweet, if overly moralistic, novella that explores the age-old notion that the grass is not always greener on. My reading of Sudha Murty was intermittent. It all changed when a friend ‘flipkart’ ed a copy of her latest book, ‘The Day I Stopped Drinking Milk’.

Very well written book.

You might end-up thinking that how you would have handled the situation when you get a chance to do so.
With Saurabhi engaged to a man named Suresh, Gouramma had to plan a date for their wedding. At its most basic it paints America as a rich but soulless country, where family ties muurthy personal connections are not important; and India as impoverished and slightly backward but where the traditional values of family and marriage are sacrosanct.
Gouramma rushes home to India, with the warm feeling of Vinutha waiting for her as a good bahu, but the tide has turned and Gouramma has to change herself to woo her bahu back.
Why is the girl brought up against odds Vinuta always the ‘good’ one and the one who is pampered with wealth Jamuna or otherwise Gauramma’s daughter are always ‘spoilt’. He sudua up to himself that she was the kind of woman every man wants because of her affectionate nature.

But she also begins to understand that mere dollars cannot buy the love and respect that she gets as her due back in Dollag. She tries her best to ignore the taunts and bitter comments of her mother-in-law.

This book sheds some real light onto how one is hypnotized seeing the shine of wealth, but in fact, it is not everything required for a family to be satisfied and contended.
The story progresses just like a typical Indian soap opera and Vinuta continues to bear all the brunt of the endless comparisons between her sudja Dollar Bahu. Odd being the key word there!! In fact, the content gets too cluttered, confusing and hurried up towards the end.

Shamanna and Gouramma and their spoilt daughter, Murtgy, and two sons, Chandru, a software engineer, and Girish, a bank clerk. Jan 30, Farhana rated it did not like it Shelves: Books by Sudha Murty. Murthy has the knack of creeping upon you unawares with an imagery that draws you right into the middle of the scene. Nothing was done by Gouramma when she was in the family way!
Even if you may not enjoy it because of Sudha’s banal prose, you will most nurthy end up thinking of how you handle d the situation where opportunity knocks at your door.

Chronicle her experiences at work, her memories of growing up in small town and experiences with her grandparents and older relatives, led to the birth of Author within her. You cannot have the best of both worlds. By the time Jamuna is expecting a child, Vinu is only expected to take instructions and no longer recognised as a vahu.

Very simple and well written. Saturday, January 12, Book Review: For Chandru, it is love at first sight, but his main sight is on bigger things, like making it big in the U. Sudha Murty, one of my favorite writer, not one of, but the most favorite you can say. Vinuta subsequently becomes a forced listener to all the lavish praise of her mother-in-law for Jamuna, which hurts her. After Chandru and Jamuna get a child, Gouramma decides to go to America to be with them.
They have three children Chandru, Girish and Surabhi.

Overall, Dollar Bahu is an enthralling read that wonderfully describes a very common situation of the glamour of the dollar in modern-day India. It is the story of a middle class family headed by Shamanna, a Sanskrit t I had gone to Sirsi in Karnataka to attend a wedding and borrowed Dollar Bahu by Sudha Murthy from the bride-to-be and could not keep it down till I finished it.
